Tips on Using One-Half Inch Drill

Post 91 of 93

Because it has more power than smaller drills, the 1/2-inch drill can bore larger holes without overloading its motor and risking a burnout. It turns at a much lower rpm, however, and so is not as well suited for sanding which requires high chuck speed.

Use the 1/2-inch drill for a large-diameter drilling and boring metal, masonry, or wood. Where deep holes are to be bored in large timbers, as in boat-building and heavy construction work, use a reversible drill. In reverse, the spiral-fluted bits can be quickly backed out of holes they have made. Because of their greater power, all 1/2-inch drills have an extra handle mounted at the side, necessary for control. The handle is removed when it is necessary to get into a tight spot such as a corner.

The 1/2-inch drill is a must for drilling holes in masonry. If the going is tough, start with a small carbide drill and then finish the job with the desired size.

Special stands are made for most 1/2-inch drills to convert them into a small drill press. Removing the drill from the stand is just a matter of a few seconds.

Tools Used for Sanding with Electric Drill

1. Drum sander – comes in various grit sizes for rough or fine work. It is used mainly for smoothing edges, also sands curved and flat surfaces.

2. Ball-jointed rubber backed disk sander – can be used for rough sanding and paint removal. It can be fitted with bonnet for polishing

3. Steel drum rasp – made in several sizes, has a 114-inch shank to fit drill chuck. It is used chiefly for rough sanding on curved surfaces.

4. Disk sander – can be used freehand or with the drill mounted on a stand. Stand to one side when using. Wear protective goggles.

Miscellaneous tools:

Chipping wheel is used for removing flaking paint from concrete floors and other surfaces. Rotating wheels have hard ended steel points.

Paint sprayer attachment uses drill to power compressor. It comes with rubber hose, spray pint cup, mounting hardware.

Paint stirrer mixes and thins. Put it in paint before turning on drill. Leave it in 10 seconds after stopping drill.

Screwdriver attachment enables you to drive or remove screws rapidly. Handy when many screws are involved.
